Ghana midfielder Daniel Kofi Kyereh has revealed that a phone call from former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah played a key role in helping him cope during a difficult spell in his career.

Kyereh earned his first Ghana call-up in 2021 but suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament injury the following year, keeping him out of action for nearly three years.

The 28-year-old recently made his return to competitive football and has since featured for SC Freiburg II as he continues his recovery and rebuilds match fitness.

Speaking in an interview with JoySports, Kyereh described how encouragement from Appiah came at a crucial moment during his rehabilitation.

Appiah, who himself endured serious knee injuries during his playing days, reached out with words of motivation that the midfielder says left a lasting impact.

During my time in rehab, he called me. I was so surprised and honoured to receive his call. Hes such a nice guy. He gave me some really encouraging words and motivated me to come back stronger, Kyereh said.

Kyereh is now expected to be in contention for a place in Ghanas squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as he continues his return to full fitness.
